Kayaking, Canoeing

Kayaking and Canoeing are great ways to enjoy the Ocmulgee River. There is a developed boat launch at Spring Street and one at Amerson Water Works Park, which is located several miles North of Spring Street. Put in at AWWP and paddle down to Spring Street and enjoy a wonderful and peaceful ride! It’s about a 1-3 hour excursion. For a longer trip, consider putting in off of Highway 18 at the S.A. Hodge, Sr. Bridge or Popes Ferry Landing and float down to AWWP or Spring Street (4-6 hours).  Ocmulgee Expeditions is wonderful company providing gear, transportation, and tours to this area.

Motor Boating

Many parts of the Ocmulgee are too shallow for motor boating, so be sure and check the river level before setting out. The only developed boat launch along the existing trail is at Spring St. New boat launches are planned for Amerson Water Works Park, several miles North of Spring Street. Spring Street has a nice boat launch and parking for your boat trailer. Put in at Spring Street and travel several miles North and South to access great fishing and beautiful views.

Tubing, Swimming

Soon you will be able to do a short 30-minute float in your tube at Amerson Water Works Park, putting in at the canoe launch and taking out at the south end of the Park.  You can currenlty put your tube in at the canoe launch at AWWP, but there is no outake until Spring Street (about a 2-3 hour float), and the next at Gateway Park.  Currently, swimming is allowed in the river all along the Trail but should be done at your own risk. For a short tubing trip, consider putting in at the Glenridge Drive trail terminus and floating down to Gateway Park. Ocmulgee Expeditions also can provide tubes and tours for this area.
